Florida – Meter feeding for elephants

Florida’s traffic code once required that if you tied your elephant, goat, or alligator to a parking meter, you had to pay the fee, just as you would for a car. It sounds wild today, but it’s rooted in a time when people actually rode animals into town.

Though it’s not actively enforced (we checked), the law technically still lingers on the books. So, you'd better leave your pet elephant behind from now on!

Idaho – Seniors and motorcycles don’t mix

In Idaho Falls, it’s long been rumored that a local ordinance makes it illegal for anyone over 88 to ride a motorcycle. That sounds oddly specific—and a bit ageist. Whether it was meant to encourage safety, misinterpreted, or inspired by one daredevil granny, no one’s quite sure.

While there's no sign of active enforcement (or even proof it still exists), the message seems clear: once you’re nearing 90, it might be time to stick to the golf cart.

Arizona – Don’t even think about driving in reverse

Arizona doesn't mess around when it comes to driving in reverse. On public roads, moving backward is a big no-no. While it’s unlikely you’ll get arrested for backing out of a driveway, pulling a full-speed reverse cruise down Main Street might land you in hot water. Arizona wants you to move forward in life—literally.

Illinois – You need a steering wheel to drive

Well, isn’t that obvious? Apparently not—because Illinois actually has a law stating that you can’t drive a car without a steering wheel.

Even if it seems like common sense, laws like this were created during the early days of car modifications, when people got creative (and sometimes reckless). So, if you were planning to steer your car using a rope-and-pulley system… maybe don’t.

Maine – No Sunday car shopping

In Maine, it’s illegal to buy a car on Sunday. Dealerships are closed by law, making it impossible to seal the deal on the most relaxing day of the weekend. Why? The rule has roots in so-called "blue laws," which were designed to preserve Sunday as a day of rest. So in Maine, if you get a wild urge to car shop after church, you’ll have to wait until Monday.

Michigan – Streets are not for reading

Michigan has a law that says you can’t sit in the middle of the road and read a newspaper. Yeah, no joke!

We know—it’s hard to imagine someone actually doing this (unless it was a very juicy headline), but the law’s goal is clearly about safety. Still, you have to admit the mental image is pretty great—just don’t try it unless you want to make the evening news.

New Hampshire – Bus fumes are not a high

New Hampshire takes a hard stance on inhaling bus fumes "with intent to cause euphoria." That’s a legal phrase, not a band name. It’s part of the state’s broader anti-huffing laws, aimed at curbing substance abuse.

Vermont – Backfiring is a no-go in Rutland

In Rutland, Vermont, letting your car backfire could technically get you in trouble. This law was probably put in place to cut down on noise or prevent panic during quieter times in history.

Today, it’s unlikely to get you arrested, but a surprise backfire might still earn you some serious side-eye from the locals. If you ask us, this should be a law everywhere!

Wisconsin – Hands off the handlebars? Not allowed

In Wisconsin, you’re not allowed to ride a bicycle with no hands. Even if you’re showing off your balance skills from the 1970s, the law says at least one hand must stay on the handlebars.

It’s all about safety—but if you’re feeling rebellious, maybe show off at the park. Just don’t do it on public roads. Keep it hands-on!

South Carolina – No trash hoarding in Hilton Head

In Hilton Head, it’s illegal to store trash in your car. That’s right—your vehicle can’t double as a mobile garbage can. The law aims to keep the area clean and tourist-friendly, but it also sounds like a not-so-subtle jab at anyone using their backseat as a trash bin. Hilton Head wants pristine beaches and clean cars!

Since the film was released in 1997, the famous theme song immortalized by Celine Dion has been played at more than one wedding. It's no coincidence: Titanic is one of the most iconic romantic films in cinema history.

While this movie is full of memorable love scenes, the one that has remained in our hearts is that of Rose (Kate Winslet) and Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) putting their class differences behind and kissing at sunset on the ship's bow. Have you ever exclaimed, "I'm flying" while embracing your beloved? We bet many of you have!

The basis of a successful romantic relationship is a beautiful friendship, and When Harry Met Sally is proof of that —even if it takes the main characters the whole film to figure it out!

Over the course of an hour and a half, spanning 12 years in the life of this couple , we see how they fall in love, even though they sometimes get on each other's nerves. In the end, during a New Year's Eve party, Harry (Billy Crystal) finally declares his love to Sally (Meg Ryan), who can't resist her friend's charm. Is When Harry Met Sally the ultimate rom-com of all time? Most definitely!

Casablanca

Have you ever heard the phrase, "If you love somebody, set them free"? That's what Rick (Humphrey Bogart) must have been thinking when, at the end of Casablanca , puts his life in danger to help Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman) flee to safety along with her husband.

Rick and Ilsa's relationship never materialized, but it has undoubtedly left us with one of the most iconic love stories the silver screen has ever produced. Yet, as a consolation, we'll always have Paris!

Undoubtedly, the chemistry between Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams has catapulted The Notebook to the podium of the most romantic movies ever. Twenty years after its release, it’s still one of the favorites among fans of the genre!

It’s very hard to choose just one romantic scene from this movie. All of it is an ode to love—and heartbreak. But perhaps the one that comes immediately to mind when we mention this film is the passionate kiss in the rain. Caught in a sudden storm, Allie finally confronts Noah for not writing to her for 7 years. Words certainly fall short of explaining the misunderstanding!

The Bridges of Madison County

Not all love flicks have a happy ending, and that doesn't make them any less romantic. In The Bridges of Madison County , Francesca (Meryl Streep), a devoted housewife, meets Robert (Clint Eastwood), a free-spirited National Geographic photographer, while her family is away.

Francesca and Robert share a passionate week together but soon must return to reality. At the end of the film, Francesca faces two choices: be obedient and stay with her husband and children or give it all up for the love of her life. The scene in the truck, where she sees him standing in the rain and is about to leave everything for love, is so full of emotion that it is almost painful to watch.

Ghost

Thanks to this film, pottery will be linked to romance forever. In one of the most iconic scenes in Ghost —and cinema in general— Molly (Demi Moore) can't sleep, so she decides to get to work. While modeling a vase to the rhythm of Unchained Melody she is joined by her steamy boyfriend Sam (Patrick Swayze).

With this scene, the film succeeds in capturing a moment of passion but also of emotional connection between two people. It is a scene of intimacy and sensuality rarely achieved so well on the big screen.

Gone with the Wind

The relationship between Scarlett O'Hara (Vivien Leigh) and Rhett Butler (Clark Gable) is as complicated as it is passionate. During nearly four hours of film that covers more than 10 years in the life of this tumultuous couple, we see their comings and goings, tender moments, and fierce fights.

Perhaps the most memorable scene in this film is the first kiss under the bright orange sunset. This, along with other equally romantic scenes, has made Gone with the Wind one of the best romantic films in the history of cinema, despite being 85 years old.

Sleepless in Seattle

​​Sleepless in Seattle is another rom-com that can't be missing from this list. In a nutshell, this is the story of a widower (Tom Hanks) looking for a new partner and mother for his son and a woman (Meg Ryan) who discovers that the love of her life might be on the other side of the country. Sounds like the formula for success, don't you think?

But did you know that the film's most memorable scene—the one in which Sam and Annie finally meet at the top of the Empire State Building —almost didn't happen? Rumor has it that the producers didn't have clearance from the building's owners. Luckily, director Nora Ephron had an ace up her sleeve and got permission to film for a mere six hours, which was enough to make this scene unforgettable.

Who said there can't be romance in an animated movie? Up is one of the favorite films among children and adults alike. In the very beginning, a montage shows us the love story of Carl and Ellie, from childhood to old age.

Throughout their life story, we witness beautiful moments such as their wedding, as well as heartbreaking events. These few scenes really have all the necessary condiments to make us laugh, love, and cry in just a few minutes.

Her

Will artificial intelligence be the future of love? We don't know, although Her tries to explore what romantic relationships would be like in a hyper-connected tomorrow. Unable to get over a breakup, Theodore (Joaquin Phoenix) begins a romantic relationship with "Samantha," his computer's operating system.

In a heartbreaking scene, Samantha asks, "Are these feelings even real?" The love between them grows deeper each day, even though they cannot explain how it came about between a human being and a machine . Probably not your standard rom-com, but certainly a film that takes the subject of love to unexpected territories.

Love Story

"Love means never having to say you're sorry," says Jenny (Ali MacGraw) to Oliver (Ryan O'Neal) in a film considered one of the most romantic by the American Film Institute.

Although it has a sad ending, Love Story succeeds in masterfully and eloquently portraying the story of two young college students who fall deeply in love despite their differences.

Before Sunrise

Is there such a thing as love at first sight? If you don't think so, then you should see Before Sunrise . In this endearing film, two strangers meet on a European train and end up roaming Vienna together all night.

In one memorable scene, Jesse (Ethan Hawke) and Céline (Julie Delpy) pretend to talk to their friends back home. When Jesse asks her what she likes about him, Céline replies, "I like to feel his eyes on me when I look away." Pretty romantic, don't you think?

A gorilla suit

Space can get boring. It got a little more entertaining for astronaut Scott Kelly in 2016, when his twin brother, Mark Kelly, sent him a vacuum-sealed gorilla suit all the way to the ISS for his birthday.

Kelly’s crewmates didn’t know about it, so he had fun pranking them by suddenly appearing in the suit aboard the station. One of the prank videos went viral. As Kelly put it: "How can you not like space gorilla?"

Dirt from Yankee Stadium

Astronaut Garrett Reisman, a lifelong Yankees fan, of course, took a little piece of the Bronx to orbit . In 2008, aboard Space Shuttle Endeavour on mission STS-123, he brought a vial of dirt from Yankee Stadium’s pitcher’s mound—along with other Yankees memorabilia, including items autographed by players.

In 2010, astronaut Shannon Walker brought Amelia Earhart’s watch to the International Space Station. The legendary aviator had worn it during two transatlantic flights , and it traveled to space on the 82nd anniversary of her first historic solo flight across the Atlantic.

Pizza

Space pizza finally became a reality in 2001, when Pizza Hut paid millions to deliver a vacuum-sealed pizza to the International Space Station.

It was, quite literally, a publicity stunt out of this world . The pizza—topped with salami to withstand space conditions—was eaten by Russian cosmonaut Yuri Usachov aboard the ISS.

Tucked into Neil Armstrong’s spacesuit was a small piece of fabric and a fragment of wood from the Wright Brothers' 1903 Flyer—carried all the way from Kitty Hawk to the Sea of Tranquility . He took them with him as he became the first person to step onto the Moon in 1969.

A set of instruments to play "Jingle Bells"

Just before Christmas in 1965, astronauts Wally Schirra and Tom Stafford pulled off a surprise serenade in space.

They had smuggled a harmonica and a set of sleigh bells aboard their Gemini 6A mission and played "Jingle Bells" for Mission Control—creating the first musical performance ever in space . The instruments are now on display at the Smithsonian Institution.

Several LEGO pieces

NASA's collaboration with LEGO took a literal leap when, in 2011, sets of LEGO bricks were sent to the International Space Station aboard mission STS-133.

Astronauts assembled models—such as the Hubble Space Telescope—in microgravity, engaging students around the world in STEM education.

A Buzz Lightyear toy

Buzz Lightyear truly went " to infinity and beyond " when a 12-inch action figure flew aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2008. Spending 15 months on the International Space Station, Buzz was part of NASA’s educational outreach efforts.

Upon return, he was honored with a parade at Disney World and now resides in the Smithsonian’s National Air and Space Museum.

A lightsaber

In a nod to sci-fi fandom, a lightsaber prop used by Mark Hamill in Return of the Jedi journeyed to space aboard Space Shuttle Discovery in 2007.

The initiative celebrated the 30th anniversary of Star Wars , symbolizing the intersection of science fiction and real-world space exploration.

Dinosaur bones

In 1985, during NASA's SpaceLab 2 mission, astronaut Loren Acton brought aboard a fossilized bone and a piece of eggshell from Maiasaura peeblesorum , a dinosaur species known for nurturing its young.

These fossils, discovered in Montana , were sent to space to symbolize the connection between Earth’s prehistoric life and space exploration.​

In a very profound gesture, Buzz Aldrin privately took Christian communion aboard Apollo 11. As a Presbyterian elder , he carried a tiny wafer and a small pouch of wine, blessing them while orbiting the Moon shortly after the lunar landing.

Golf clubs (and golf balls)

During Apollo 14, Alan Shepard secretly packed a makeshift 6-iron —a golf club head duct-taped to a lunar tool—and two golf balls.

On live TV, he took a couple of awkward, one-handed swings while wearing his stiff spacesuit. The first ball flopped; the second soared "miles and miles," Shepard joked. It actually traveled about 40 yards, which is quite impressive in lunar terms.
