Many once-standard school customs in the U.S. have quietly vanished—phased out by shifting norms, safety rules, and cultural changes. These traditions shaped daily routines for generations, yet few remain today. From daily cursive drills to milk breaks , here are 10 traditions that have disappeared, along with the reasons behind their decline.

Home economics class

Home economics as a school subject peaked in the mid-20th century, teaching sewing, cooking, and budgeting —often aimed at girls.

By the 2000s, however, many states had folded it into a broader "family and consumer sciences" category, as shifting gender roles and changing cultural habits made the old curriculum feel increasingly outdated.

Woodshop in every school

Lightly supervised children with access to power tools? Today, it seems hard to believe, but woodshop was a standard industrial arts course throughout the 1950s–1980s.

Declines began in the 1990s due to higher liability insurance costs, budget cuts, and a growing emphasis on college-prep academics over practical skills. Some schools still maintain limited woodworking programs, often using them as hands-on, integrated learning tools.

The dodgeball era

Dodgeball dominated physical education classes well into the 1990s, often using hard rubber balls that were notorious for causing stingers, bruises, and occasional injuries . The game was popular because it required little equipment, could fill an entire class period, and kept large groups of students active.

By the 2000s, however, concerns about safety and bullying led many districts to restrict or replace dodgeball with more structured team sports. Some schools still play modified versions, usually with soft foam balls and strict rules.

Chalkboard dusting

For over a century, green and black chalkboards were the centerpiece of American classrooms, with students regularly assigned to "clap out" erasers outside to clear the built-up dust. Chalk was cheap, durable, and easy for teachers to use in large rooms.

By the 1990s, districts began replacing chalkboards with whiteboards due to dust concerns linked to asthma and indoor air quality. The shift accelerated as overhead projectors, digital displays, and interactive whiteboards provided cleaner surfaces and reduced inhalation hazards.

Daily milk breaks

Mid-morning milk breaks became common in American elementary schools after the USDA expanded dairy subsidies through programs like the Special Milk Program in 1954. For decades, students lined up for small cartons—usually whole milk—intended to boost childhood nutrition and support U.S. dairy producers during periods of surplus.

By the 1990s and 2000s, milk breaks declined as updated nutrition guidelines shifted schools toward broader meal programs rather than standalone milk service.

In-school smoking lounges

The idea of teens openly smoking on school grounds would be almost unimaginable under today’s health and liability standards. But through the 1960s and into the early 1980s, many American high schools—especially in the Midwest and Northeast—maintained designated smoking areas for students.

The practice disappeared quickly as federal and state regulations tightened, beginning with widespread adoption of indoor smoking bans in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 1994 Surgeon General’s report and anti-tobacco campaigns further pushed districts to eliminate student smoking sections altogether.

Daily cursive drills

For most of the 20th century, daily cursive drills were a nonnegotiable part of American schooling , often reinforced by specific handwriting manuals. Teachers devoted significant class time to perfecting loops, slants, and connected strokes, because cursive was considered essential for legibility, speed, and personal discipline.

The decline accelerated after the rollout of the Common Core State Standards in 2010, which omitted cursive entirely in favor of keyboarding and digital literacy benchmarks. With shrinking instructional time, cursive was often one of the first skills removed from early-grade schedules.

From the 1960s through the 1990s, class pets—hamsters, guinea pigs, turtles, goldfish, and even the occasional lizard—were staples of American elementary classrooms. Teachers used them to teach responsibility, empathy, and basic biology , and many classes created rotating "pet helper" charts for feeding and tank cleaning.

Today, the idea of a live animal in a crowded classroom, handled daily by students, feels out of step with modern safety, allergy, and sanitation standards. Maintenance costs, humane-treatment rules, and the challenge of caring for animals during breaks led schools to retire these longtime classroom mascots.

For much of the mid-20th century, student hall monitors were a fixture in American schools. Selected students—often upper-grade or high-performing—wore badges or sashes and were tasked with checking hall passes, reporting loitering, and keeping noise down between classes.

By the 1990s, the role faded as schools adopted professional security staff, stricter attendance protocols, and legal liability rules that made peer enforcement impractical. As districts invested in cameras, campus supervisors, and centralized discipline systems, the traditional hall monitor quietly disappeared from most American schools.

From the 1950s through the early 1970s, influenced by Cold War fitness campaigns, many American schools began the day with school-wide calisthenics —jumping jacks, toe touches, and arm circles—led over the PA system.

The practice faded as schedules tightened and PE moved into dedicated class periods, with research favoring structured fitness over brief daily routines. Today, the idea of entire schools performing synchronized drills feels almost militaristic.

Bacon Cheeseburger

Let us begin with the most obvious and ubiquitous diner staple of all time: the bacon cheeseburger . This decadent concoction of ground beef, buns, melted cheddar, bacon, and a few more ingredients has graced the menus of diners forever.

While most are meant to be eaten as a sandwich, more than a few places offer monstrous creations that have to be opened and eaten in pieces or with a knife and fork, as the sheer size of the hamburger cannot fit in an open mouth.

Club Sandwich

Another menu classic, the club sandwich consists of three superimposed slices of toast with two fillings, cut into triangular quarters that point upward like they're reaching for the heavens. Fresh turkey breast and bacon are the standard ingredients, but some diners have come to specialize in clubs and their variations.

Supposedly, the sandwich was invented in Saratoga Springs, New York, at the racetrack clubhouse in 1894, hence its name.

An iconic breakfast side, hash browns are an omnipresent add-on to scrambled eggs, bacon strips, and many more classic dishes. They consist of finely julienned potatoes that have been fried until golden browned.

No matter which diner you visit to get breakfast, you’ll more than likely find these crispy potato strings on the menu, as they are appreciated for their simplicity, versatility, and satisfying crunch.

Eggs Benedict

A breakfast or brunch dish with a funny name, Eggs Benedict consists of two halves of an English muffin, each topped with Canadian bacon, a poached egg, and hollandaise sauce.

While it was popularized in New York City, it is generally believed to have been created in New York City in the late 19th century, this dish can be found all over the country and is a menu staple in diners everywhere.

Biscuits and gravy

A hearty breakfast ideal for chilly Midwest mornings and a cowboy diet staple, biscuits and gravy are made with warm, soft dough biscuits, covered in white gravy made from the drippings of cooked pork sausage, flour, milk, and often bits of sausage, bacon, ground beef, or other meat.

Most classic diners worth their salt will offer some variation of this delicious dish.

Tuna Melt

Even though the title of this diner favorite suggests it, nobody has ever melted a fish yet. The "melt" part of a tuna melt is achieved by a substance that is much more capable of reaching that state: cheese.

Supposedly, this delicious sandwich was invented when a lunch counter cook accidentally tipped a bowl of tuna salad onto a piece of toasted cheese already frying on the flat top. The result proved quite tasty, and thus, the dish was born. Whether one decides to believe it or not, tuna melt makes for a great diner menu item.

Meatloaf

A close cousin to the traditional diner hamburger, the meatloaf also has German origins. However, instead of the pork and veal meat that must be used in its homeland, the American meatloaf is done with ground beef. Its distinctive flavor comes from masses of onions that meld with the beef fat, and the flavor mellows as the meatloaf bakes.

The resulting dish is smothered in gravy, and presented with lots of mashed potatoes, fresh vegetables, and extra gravy on the side.

Passing on now to the desserts, we encounter a champion of American breakfasts and a menu item that no respectable diner should be without: the almighty pancake .

Whether it comes with fruit, chocolate chips, or more, this comfort food is covered with a generous amount of syrup to help lubricate and ease the journey from mouth to stomach with every bite.

French speakers might ask: "To Which Mode?" to which the answer would be: ice cream! Pie à la Mode is, simply put, a slice of -usually- apple pie with ice cream on top.

This sweet treat can be found in refrigerated glass display cases showcased in diners since refrigeration was invented. And there is a great reason for that, as the resulting mix of the crunchy base, the sweet apple, and the ice cream make for an amazing dessert.

In the 1970s, a group of hot air balloon fans got together in Albuquerque, New Mexico , and decided to honor their passion by creating this festival, which was held for the first time in 1972. In that inaugural year, there were just over 10 balloons, a big difference from the hundreds and hundreds you can see at the festival today.

The Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta is held annually in early October and lasts for nine days! If you want to go, start planning your visit, as around 800,000 visitors attend the event every year.

This is the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, better known as just Coachella.

With the goal of bringing together artists from different genres, Paul Tollett and Rick Van Santen launched the festival in 1999 . Set against the backdrop of the Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert, the music and dancing create a unique experience.

Although it didn't take place in 2000, Coachella became an annual event starting in 2001 and has grown ever since. Considered one of the largest and most popular music festivals in the world, it attracts around 250,000 people every year.

It was the French who brought this tradition to America in the late 17th century. The first American Mardi Gras took place in 1703 in Mobile, Alabama. However, the city of New Orleans, Louisiana, made the celebration famous.

Held annually during the last day of Carnival—that is, the day before Ash Wednesday—Mardi Gras displays its renowned parade full of masks and costumes attracting over a million visitors every year! Roland Swenson, Louis Black, and Nick Barbaro met in Austin, Texas, in 1987 with a shared idea. They felt that local bands and musicians deserved a chance to showcase their talents. And so South by Southwest was born. Today, the event has grown so much that it is now a massive festival that celebrates not just music but also movies!

SXSW is held in Austin every March, spanning around 10 days. If you are interested in tech, entertainment , and the media industry in general, you can't miss this festival, which attracts about 500,000 people!

If you are looking for paradisiacal landscapes, the Aloha Festival is your destination. It takes place every year during September, and you've probably guessed where: in the beautiful state of Hawaii .

With the aim of celebrating and honoring Hawaiian culture, this festival was established in 1946 . Today, the festival spans about two weeks, during which visitors and locals come together to enjoy hula dancing, parades, contests, and art exhibits. This show emerged in 1959 as a way to showcase the capabilities and skills of military aircraft and offer an exciting spectacle for people in Chicago. Over the years, the event has become one of the most famous air and water shows.

It is usually held during the third weekend of August. If you want to see aerial tricks and performances—including incredible moves by the famous U.S. Navy Blue Angels and U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds—this festival is the show for you. Comic-Con

Perhaps all you need to create a world-famous event is a group of enthusiastic people who share the same passion as you. Such was the case for the group of comic book fans who gathered in San Diego, California, and held the first Comic-Con in 1970 . Their goal was to celebrate everything from beloved comics and iconic characters to movies, TV series, video games, and pop culture.

Today, Comic-Con has spread around the world. The San Diego convention, in particular, remains one of the most prominent, with around 140,000 people each year.

Many attendees come dressed as their favorite heroes and characters, playing the roles and trading memorabilia with other fans. The event also attracts well-known actors, authors, cartoonists, directors, and animators, so you might meet one of them during your visit!

The Sundance Film Festival

This festival was born in 1978 as the Utah/US Film Festival in Salt Lake City, with the intention of showcasing independent American cinema. A few years later, it was moved to Park City, and it was renamed the Sundance Film Festival in 1985 after Robert Redford's character in the 1969 film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid .

Today, it is a major festival that showcases various film categories and genres, gathering around 120,000 people each January. In addition, the event attracts talented directors, screenwriters, and actors.

Burning Man

In 1986, Larry Harvey and Jerry James gathered on Baker Beach in San Francisco, California, and built a large wooden effigy. They then decided to set it on fire , which led to the birth of the Burning Man Festival.

What started as a spontaneous act then grew into an annual event, attracting more and more people each year. The lack of space made that, in 1990, the event was moved to the Black Rock Desert in Nevada, where it is still held today.

Each year, around 70,000 people unite in the desert for 9 days between August and September, performing artistic expressions and exchanging products and gifts. The event culminates in the incredible burning of the effigy, also known as "The Man." If you enjoy adventure and don't mind "a bit" of fire, you must attend this festival!
