Just a few decades ago, American menus looked very different. Before refrigerators, mass branding, and globalization, everyday meals were shaped by practicality, leftovers, and local habits. Some dishes thrived for decades, or even generations, before fading away. The following 12 meals were not exotic or fancy but plain, everyday dishes. Which one do you remember most?

Jello Molds

Jello molds were once a centerpiece of American entertaining, especially from the 1930s through the 1960s. They appeared at holidays, potlucks, and family dinners, often filled with fruit, marshmallows, or even vegetables and meat .

As tastes shifted away from gelatin-based dishes, these colorful creations slowly disappeared. Today, they’re more likely to spark nostalgia or even humor than appetite.

Chicken à la King

Chicken à la King was a creamy comfort dish found in homes, cafeterias, and hotel dining rooms across the country. Made with diced chicken, mushrooms, and peppers in a rich sauce , it was commonly served over toast or rice.

Once considered elegant yet approachable, it fell out of popularity as lighter, faster meals took over. Today, it’s rarely seen outside vintage cookbooks.

Salisbury Steak

Salisbury steak was once a standard American dinner, served in restaurants, school cafeterias, and home kitchens alike. Made from seasoned ground beef and smothered in gravy, it was filling, affordable, and easy to prepare.

As food culture moved away from processed and institutional meals, Salisbury steak lost its appeal. Today, it’s mostly associated with frozen dinners or nostalgic meals.

Chipped Beef ("SOS")

Chipped beef, thin slices of dried beef served in white gravy , was once ubiquitous. It appeared on breakfast tables and became especially associated with military dining during the early and mid-20th century.

Its strong, salty flavor eventually pushed it out of favor. While still remembered by many Americans, chipped beef is now rarely served outside a few traditional diners.

Porcupine Meatballs

Despite the name, no porcupines were involved in making this dish. The meatballs were made from ground beef mixed with rice , which poked out during cooking, giving the dish its nickname.

Popular during the Great Depression, porcupine meatballs stretched limited meat into hearty meals. As economic conditions improved and tastes changed, this clever and thrifty dish gradually faded from everyday cooking.

Olive Loaf

Olive loaf was once a common deli meat, recognizable by its pink color and green olive pieces . It was frequently sliced for sandwiches and served at lunches throughout the mid-20th century.

Changing tastes and the rise of fresher deli options pushed olive loaf into obscurity. Today, it’s remembered mostly by those who grew up seeing it behind deli counters.

Pickled Herring

Pickled herring was widely eaten by Americans of Northern European descent and was once a common item in grocery stores and home pantries. It was valued for its long shelf life and strong flavor .

As newer protein options became widely available, pickled fish fell out of favor. Today, it survives mainly in specialty stores and cultural traditions rather than on mainstream American menus.

Ambrosia Salad

Ambrosia salad combines fruit, coconut, marshmallows, and cream into a sweet side dish. It was especially popular at holidays and church gatherings.

Over time, its sugary profile and unusual texture made it feel outdated. While still remembered fondly, ambrosia salad is now far less common on modern tables.

Braunschweiger Sandwiches

Braunschweiger, a type of liver sausage, was once a standard sandwich filling in American households. Spread on bread with mustard or onions , it was inexpensive and widely available.

As Americans moved away from organ meats, Braunschweiger lost popularity. Today, it’s mostly limited to specialty markets and nostalgic diners.

Oyster sandwiches were once everyday food in coastal cities, especially in the 19th and early 20th centuries. Oysters were cheap, abundant, and commonly fried or stewed .

As oyster populations declined and prices rose, the sandwich disappeared from daily menus. Today, oysters are considered a treat rather than a working-class staple.

Scrapple is a pork-based dish made from scraps, cornmeal, and spices . It was once common throughout the Mid-Atlantic, especially as a breakfast food.

While still eaten regionally, scrapple never regained national popularity. Many Americans now view it as unusual, despite its once-widespread presence.

Creamed onions were once a classic American dish, especially at holiday meals. Small onions were simmered and served in a thick, creamy sauce .

As side dishes became simpler and lighter, creamed onions fell out of favor. Now, they appear mainly in old family recipes or historical menus.

Did you know that Oreos were originally sold as part of a trio of cookies? Not only that, they were sold under a much less marketable name: Hydrox, which doesn’t really fit such a delicious treat.

Have you ever wondered where the name "Snickers" comes from? You might be inclined to think that it comes from the hearty laughter that might arise after eating one of these delicious bars, but the answer is actually rather strange: It comes from a horse! Specifically, it was the name of the Mars family horse, who decided to immortalize their beloved stallion in 1930.

Regardless of its unusual name, Snickers is one of the most beloved candy bars in America, if not the world. Over their 90 years of history, they have produced a number of delicious variants of their traditional caramel and peanut filling, including dark and white chocolate, as well as peanut butter and almond.

We’ll continue with an American icon. If you ask anyone from outside the United States to choose 3 things to define our country, they’ll probably include apple pie . This beloved sweet treat is heavily associated with the 4th of July celebrations, but let’s be honest: There’s no bad time to have a slice or two of apple pie.

For such a culinary staple, apple pie definitely has a lot of variants. For instance, you can enjoy a delicious apple pie à la mode by adding a scoop of vanilla ice cream. Other toppings include custard, whipped cream, or (surprisingly) a slice of cheddar cheese.

We debated which Reese’s product to include in this list: their delicious Peanut Butter Cups or their outstanding Pieces. We decided to go for the Peanut Butter Cup, if only for one reason. This amazing product was one of the first to showcase what a dynamic duo of chocolate and peanut butter make.

The story of Reese’s Peanut Butter Cup s goes back to 1928, when H. B. Reese, a dairy farmer employed by the Hershey Company, decided to start his own candy company after he was let go of his job. The rest is history! Almost 100 years after, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups are still one of America’s most cherished sweet treats.

If you ever find yourself in the beautiful city of New Orleans, you’ll be amazed by everything "The Big Easy" has to offer, from its amazing jazz, gorgeous architecture, and mouth-watering food. In that regard, take this piece of advice to heart: Don’t leave New Orleans without having some delicious beignets with a hot cup of coffee.

Like many of the things that make New Orleans so special, beignets come directly from French culture. They were most likely brought over by French colonists in the 18th century. However, Louisiana-style beignets stand out because they are topped with powdered sugar and are mostly eaten for breakfast.

Many believe that the Boston cream pie was created in 1856 by Chef Mossburg Sanzian at the Parker House Hotel. Regardless of its origins, this cream-filled delicacy has grown to become a staple of Boston cuisine, being declared the city’s state pie in 1996.

If TV has taught us anything, it is that police officers and donuts go hand in hand. But let’s be honest: You don’t really need to be an officer to enjoy a delicious donut . This tasty treat has become an instantly recognizable pop icon, with its iconic shape and many colorful frostings.

It is believed that donuts were first brought to America by Dutch settlers, who brought a similar pastry called an olykoek to New York. In time, donuts would be happily adopted by the entire country. Nowadays, millions of these treats are consumed around America every day.

Let’s continue with " The Great American Chocolate Bar." Over 120 years ago, the very first Hershey bar was sold by American chocolatier and businessman Milton Hershey. This first bar unknowingly started one of the most lucrative and iconic chocolate companies in the world.

After that first bar sold at the start of the 20th century, Hershey has produced a myriad of iconic products, including their "Cookies ‘n’ Creme Bar" or their "Air Delight Bar." Regardless, you know that whenever you unwrap a delicious Hershey’s chocolate bar , you’ll find some of the world’s finest chocolate inside.

Cobbler

Let’s face it; the word " cobbler " is an awful-sounding word for such a delicious treat. Not only that, historians can’t seem to agree on where this name comes from. Many believe that it is a variant of the verb "to cobble", while others state that it comes from its resemblance to a ‘cobbled’ stone pathway. But we digress: Let’s instead just focus on how delicious they are.

Although originally created in the United Kingdom, cobblers are particularly popular in America, with many states and regions having their very own special variants. American cobblers are literally too many to mention, so we’ll just highlight a few of our favorites, like the "Brown Betty" (made with fruits and sweetened crumbles) or the "apple pan dowdy".

M&Ms

We’ll end this article with one of America’s most iconic pieces of candy. At first glance, M&Ms are deceptively simple: They are just small and colorful pieces of chocolate. However, as anyone who has eaten a handful of M&Ms will tell you, there’s something magical to these small yet wonderful sweet treats.

M&Ms were created in 1941, inspired by a similar British product called "Smarties". The two Ms featured in the name come from Forrest Mars Sr., who created the product, and Bruce Murrie, stakeholder and son of Hershey Chocolate’s president.

Titanic & The Music Man

It is common knowledge that Titanic (1997), starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, fictionalizes the true story of the sinking of the British ocean liner that collided with an iceberg in the North Atlantic.

The Music Man (1962), on the other hand, is a musical that tells the story of a salesman who tries to convince the residents of a small town in Iowa to start a musical band. Although the two films are set miles apart and their characters are very different, they both take place in the same year: 1912. Fascinating, don't you think?

While There Will Be Blood is a dark film that focuses on the California oil rush, Meet Me in St. Louis , starring the iconic Judy Garland, portrays the well-to-do life of an upper-middle-class Missouri family. Watching these two films truly paints a picture of what America was like at this time in its history.

Grease & Malcolm X

Two other films that offer their version of American life during a specific era are Grease (1978) and Malcolm X (1992). Both take place around 1958, but couldn't be more different.

Grease , a romantic musical with gelled hairdos and poodle skirts, portrays a group of teenagers more concerned with leather jackets, rock and roll, and fashionable cars than anything else. Malcom X , on the contrary, is based on the biography of the famous African-American activist, and dives deep into the history of the civil rights movement.

Barry Lyndon & Pirates of the Caribbean

The story of a young Irishman trying to climb the ladder of British high society can't be too different from that of a pirate sailing through dangerous waters. However, although Barry Lyndon (1975) and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011) take place in the 1750s, they are very dissimilar films.

While Pirates of the Caribbean is a fantasy adventure franchise chronicling the adventures of the endearing Jack Sparrow, the historic drama directed by Stanley Kubrick won four Academy Awards and is considered one of the greatest films ever made.

The Godfather: Part II & 1917

The year is 1917, and a young Vito Corleone takes his first steps in the criminal world in his native Sicily. Meanwhile, in northern France, a young British soldier is sent on a mission to save his brother.

1917 (2019) is inspired by the true story of World War I battles, and The Godfather: Part II (1974) is based on the fictional story written by Mario Puzo about a gangster family. Both films, however, portray the same period of European history, an era that had a huge impact on American society.

Jobs & 2001: A Space Odyssey

Surely, when Stanley Kubrick directed 2001: A Space Odyssey, he was envisioning a more advanced future. But the truth is that the real 2001 was marked, among other things, by the launch of Apple's iPod.

The film Jobs (2013) begins precisely with Steve Jobs' presentation of the device that would forever change the way we listen to music. Intergalactic travel as a common currency will have to wait a few more years. Yet, to be fair, HAL 9000 is pretty much like the artificial intelligences we have today —let's just hope they don't betray us!

While a young governess falls in love with Captain von Trapp with the Austrian Alps as a backdrop, on the other side of the Atlantic, a nightclub owner in Harlem must face powerful gangsters to stay in business.

Although they may seem like two incompatible plots, The Sound of Music (1965) and Harlem Nights (1989) both take place in 1938, when the United States was recovering from the Great Depression and Europe was at the dawn of the Second World War. Two opposite views of the world.

13 Going on 30 & The Wolf of Wall Street

One is an innocent romantic comedy full of '80s pop culture references, and the other is a dark, full of foul language and racy scenes, portrait of the years when yuppies and stockbrokers dominated the New York scene. Yet, both 13 Going on 30 (2004) and The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) take place in 1987. Have you ever thought about it?

Hairspray & The Shape of Water

The interesting thing about these two films is that they not only take place in the same year—1962—, but also in the same ‘place’: Baltimore, Maryland.

Hairspray (1988), a cult comedy directed by John Waters, tells the story of young Tracy Turnbland's quest to be taken seriously in an audition for a popular show for young dancers. The Shape of Water , on the other hand, is a fantasy film that portrays the love story between a mute woman and a humanoid amphibian. Two very different plots that offer a glimpse of what life was like in America during the Cold War.
