We have all tried to ride a bike with no hands when we were kids. You probably got to the point of taking the challenge one step further and driving with no hands on an empty road. Now, driving blindfolded is a bit extreme, right?

Alabama has a law that forbids drivers from driving blindfolded and that is not all, drivers aren’t allowed to drive if they can’t see what’s to the sides or in front of them. Now, if the law exists, that must mean it was needed at some point, right?

Louisiana - Pizza Party

Sending gifts is a great way to say "I love you" or "I’m sorry." Whatever the situation, we’ve seen it a million times: a knock on the door, a pizza delivery guy handing a pizza box, and a cheesy, but loving message as a topping: "I love you."

Well, if those were your plans but you live in Louisiana, you might as well think twice before you do it. This state has a law that forbids inhabitants from sending unsolicited pizza, no matter how considerate this gesture might be. If you do, be ready to pay a $500 fine. How much is your love worth?

Virginia - Halloween Arrangement

All across America, when October comes, millions of people get their costumes ready for the spookiest night of the year. And we are not talking only children here. How many Adults-only Halloween parties have you been to?

However, the Halloween fun is limited in Chesapeake City, Virginia. Dress up all you want and party all night long, but don’t you dare go trick-or-treating alone if you are over 14 . Not because you might get haunted by ghosts, but because the law forbids you. And for the under-14s you know, let them know they have to be home by 8 pm according to the curfew. Quite a bummer, huh?

South Caroline - Pinball Limitations

Ah, to be young and play games again, right? The possibilities were endless, board games, card games, pinball… Well, not anymore, not for everyone, at least!

In South Carolina, pinball is forbidden for people over 18 years of age. And it has nothing to do with maturity, it is not that they don’t allow the fun in adults. The reason behind this regulation has to do with the fact that the game is considered addictive and dangerous for some reason we can’t figure out! Can you imagine what it is? If this sounds bizarre, wait until you read the next one!

Vermont - Permission to Get Teeth Done

Now, this is where America gets a bit bizarre. For a very long time, women have needed men’s permission to get all sorts of things done around the house and about their health. But as we said, society has changed and America has adapted to those improvements.

Surprising as it may be, Vermont has a law that requires women to ask for their husband’s permission before they get false teeth. You heard that right!

It must have been a surprise for the government itself as it is a law that is not enforced anymore, but it still hasn’t been overturned!

Kentucky - Marriage restrictions

Speaking of husbands and wives, Kentucky must have seen the weirdest things when it came to marriages. That is fair, relationships are a complex business.

You fall in love and you get married. You fall out of love and you get a divorce. But love, funny thing, huh? You might fall back in love and want to get married again to the same person. Well, that is about it in Kentucky.

The state’s legislators have limited marriage so that no man can marry the same woman more than three times . This is just bizarre, even if you were allowed to do so, why would you? Right?

Oregon - Cemeteries Are Off the Limits

Hunting is a very much praised activity in the United States. However, for different reasons, such as animal protection or nature conservation, some aspects of the hobby have been banned across the country.

In the state of Oregon, for example, you cannot hunt within the limits of a cemetery. Now, this sounds just about right, doesn’t it? After all, it is sacred soil. Well, as morally obvious as this may sound, the case of a specific hunter carrying his business in a cemetery led legislators to forbid the activity. Wait for it, this is nothing compared to the last prohibition!

Ohio - Mind Your Gas

Driving can be quite soothing, although it requires a high level of attention. You must check your tires, turn the lights on, and place the mirrors in the right position. And of course, you have to get the tank full before anything else.

Even if it seems quite unlikely that anyone would run out of gas intentionally, Youngstown, Ohio has a law that forbids drivers from running out of gas. If this happens, it is considered a misdemeanor offense. Running out of gas in the middle of your driving is bad enough, add a ticket to it!

Indiana - Horses Are Just Horses

Even if these majestic animals were used for transportation for a very long time , we can all agree that they have served their purpose and now is time to let them be. Well, Indiana must have been a place where this wasn’t the case until a law forbidding horse racing was passed.

The law actually says that horse-based travels are not allowed to run over 100mph . Even if the reasons are not so clear, one can only assume this was a nuisance for the inhabitants of the state.

Arizona - Donkeys Belong Elsewhere

This article comes to an end with what is, probably, the weirdest law of them all and it involves bathtubs and donkeys . Just saying it sounds bizarre.

Back in the 1920s, a very much-pampered donkey sleeping in a bathtub caused a home to flood. Don’t worry! The animal made it, although it didn’t quite notice as it was asleep the whole time.

Now, as a consequence, Arizona still has a law that forbids donkeys from sleeping in a bathtub in an attempt to avoid such an occurrence repeating itself! You better go buy a proper bed for your donkey now!

Spider-Man 3 (2007)

Tobey Maguire’s Spider-Man had been one of the most successful hits of the 2000s . That’s why, when Spider-Man 3 (2007) began production in 2005, it was given the highest budget of any movie in history at the time: around $258 million.

If you’ve seen this movie, you might have guessed that the biggest portion of the budget went into special effects for its three different villains. The New Goblin, Venom, and Sandman were three separate challenges for the visual effects team, particularly Sandman , played by Thomas Haden Church. Groundbreaking technology had to be developed to animate explosive sand fists and parting bodies of sand, making the character’s action scenes cost millions of dollars each.

Titanic (1997)

To begin with, building the full-scale ship model and massive water tank for Titanic (1997) cost over $150 million. Director James Cameron was very particular about authenticity, so the ship’s interior design was meticulously designed to match that of the original Titanic. At the time, it was also the most expensive movie ever made. But one might argue it was all worth it.

The CGI, stunts, and practical effects used for replicating the sinking sequence were especially costly. Bear in mind that Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet were already known young talents by the time they were cast for this movie, so they took a small share of the fortune—around $5 million between them. Famously, though, James Cameron forfeited his paycheck to keep the movie under budget, much like Jack climbing down from the door to keep Rose afloat. It worked out in the end because he earned $97 million from backend profits.

Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Balancing the stories of all of these superheroes was just as challenging as paying all the corresponding actors. Avengers: Infinity War (2018) had an estimated budget of almost $400 million. Who could forget the battle scenes filled with as many timeless superheroes as A-list actors? Reportedly, Robert Downey Jr. alone took home around $75 million after backend deals.

This two-hour-and-a-half movie had over 2,500 visual effects shots, which included the destruction of a planet and a ship, as well as an epic battle in the fictional Wakanda . Not to mention the advanced motion-capture technology required for Josh Brolin’s portrayal of Thanos, the villain of the film.

Avengers: Endgame (2019)

When Avengers: Infinity War was released, it became the highest-grossing superhero film in history, amassing over $2 billion at the box office. But that title lasted it around a year, until its sister sequel Avengers: Endgame (2019) surpassed it. The sequel cost roughly the same as the previous installment but came just shy of earning $3 billion .

Just like the previous ones, this Avengers installment had a star-studded cast that included Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, and Chris Hemsworth. A feast of 3 hours worth of cameos, the movie ended with a climactic final battle scene, where almost every hero from the Marvel Cinematic Universe assembled. Making this movie involved hundreds of extras, an enormous amount of CGI, masterful choreography, and an unprecedented skill for star scheduling .

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End (2007)

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End had a budget of around $300 million, making it one of the most expensive films ever at the time of its 2007 release. Whoever watched this film will remember a waterfall at the edge of the world or a massive final battle between two ships over a maelstrom. Those takes relied heavily on CGI, but not entirely. As with previous productions in the franchise, filming required large-scale water sets and multiple ships to be built. The cost of both practical and visual effects for these scenes was astronomical.

Admittedly, a significant portion of the budget went to the ensemble cast, particularly Johnny Depp, who received a notable pay bump following the massive success of the first two films. Keith Richards , the Rolling Stones guitarist, was also famously featured, adding to the film’s star power.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Surprise! The Avengers movie with the most colossal budget was the least liked of the four. It sometimes puzzles fans to learn that it cost $365 million in 2015, which, adjusted for inflation, would be over $430 million today.

Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) had to use massive amounts of CGI to create cinematic takes on the levitating fictional city of Sokovia. Destruction, flying characters, drones, and explosions contributed significantly to the costs. More importantly, filming on location and flying so many celebrities around the globe added to the expense. This movie showed scenes filmed all over the world, including the U.S., South Africa, Italy, South Korea, and England.

Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019)

Lightsaber battles have never been cheap. Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker (2019) had a reported production budget of around $275 million. It was the third Star Wars movie produced by Disney, and while the budget had decreased compared to the previous installments, it was still a financial success.

The final battle sequence on the Sith planet Exegol required a fortune, but it needed to: as it served as the climax of Disney’s trilogy. Special effects even included the scenes of characters like General Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher . The film faced the unique challenge of incorporating footage of Fisher filmed for previous Star Wars movies after her passing in 2016.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (2011)

Even though the 4th installment of the Pirates franchise had relatively low reviews, it became the second film in the saga to surpass a billion dollars in box office revenue. Released in 2011, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides had a staggering budget of $379 million.

Mermaids, zombies, splitting ships, boats on fire, and a Fountain of Youth all required the coordination of several visual effects teams. The salaries of new stars like Penélope Cruz , along with filming locations across Hawaii, the UK, California, and Puerto Rico, added to the costs. Also, this was the first movie in the franchise to be shot for 3D screenings .

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018)

A movie that revolves around dinosaurs fleeing from a volcanic eruption , Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (2018), received an estimated budget of around $432 million. How are dinosaurs created? Much like the earlier films of the saga, this one used a mix of CGI and animatronics , especially for the more up-close, intimate scenes involving Velociraptors and an Indoraptor.

For the dinosaur auction scene, a whole large-scale set was built. Filming also took place in Hawaii, England, and Spain. The stars of the Jurassic World trilogy, Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, reportedly earned around $10 million each.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)

When Disney acquired the rights to produce movies from Lucasfilm , it proceeded to give the first installment of their Star Wars reboot the biggest budget it had ever given. That was over $447 million in 2015.

With J.J. Abrams directing a Star Wars movie after so long, he could indulge in creating a full-size Millennium Falcon , animatronic creatures, and remote-controlled puppetry. The Starkiller Base destruction sequence was one of the most expensive scenes. Not to mention that the legendary face of Star Wars , Mark Hamill, had a very short cameo at the end of this movie; that one-minute feature alone earned him $3 million .

The Whaley House in San Diego, California

The Whaley House is one of the few homes officially deemed "haunted" by the US government. Visitors report footsteps echoing in empty hallways, cold spots that won’t go away, and spectral figures on the stairs. How did it come to this? Built in 1857 by Thomas Whaley, the house stands on the site of former gallows. Whaley installed San Diego’s first brick house, which included a courtroom, general store, and theater space.

Unfortunately, Whaley’s daughter died by suicide in the house, and other family members passed away under the same roof. Accumulated tragedies and a spooky old house were enough to turn this eerie spot into a museum.

The Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles, California

Built in 1927, this glamorous hotel hosted the very first Academy Awards. Stars like Clark Gable, Charlie Chaplin, and Marilyn Monroe were among its esteemed guests. But, according to recent visitors, Monroe never really checked out.

She is said to appear in a mirror that once hung in her poolside suite. Guests have reported seeing the reflection of a blonde woman behind them, only to turn around and find no one there. How would you react?

Did you expect to find America’s most powerful address on this list? As it turns out, presidents, first ladies, and staff have all reported eerie encounters over the years, with Abraham Lincoln’s presence as a recurring theme.

Queen Wilhelmina of the Netherlands allegedly fainted after seeing his ghost, and Eleanor Roosevelt claimed to feel his presence. Even Winston Churchill and Ronald Reagan contributed to the stories of a mysterious presence in the Lincoln Bedroom. Reagan famously reported that his dog, Rex, refused to enter the room.

The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California

When it comes to haunted mansions, Sara Winchester’s old Victorian-Gothic house will always sit in the podium.

After her wealthy husband and several family members died within months of each other , Sara began commissioning the construction of this puzzling house, which remained under continuous construction for 38 years. Naturally, it’s a bit of a labyrinth.

With staircases that lead nowhere, séance rooms, and flickers of shadowy figures here and there, the house stands as a monument to grief—and to ghosts.

The Villisca Axe Murder House in Villisca, Iowa

It might look like a quaint white farmhouse, but in 1912, it was the site of one of America’s most brutal unsolved murders. The Moore family and two guests were killed with an axe while they slept. There were no witnesses, and no real explanation was ever found.

Today, the house remains frozen in time, restored to its 1912 condition. Creaking floors, oil lamps, and a whole lot of uneasy silence.

Lizzie Borden House in Fall River, Massachusetts

You know the rhyme: "Lizzie Borden took an axe…" This New England house was the scene of one of America’s most infamous double murders in 1892. Lizzie was acquitted, but many believe she was responsible for the deaths of her father and stepmother, who were found dead under violent and suspicious circumstances.

Today, the house operates as a B&B for the brave and the curious. Guests have reported hearing footsteps, whispers, and even muffled cries coming from empty rooms. Some even choose to sleep in the very bedroom where Abby Borden met her tragic end.

The Lemp Mansion in St. Louis, Missouri

Once home to the wealthy Lemp brewing dynasty, the mansion witnessed four family suicides between 1904 and 1949. That’s enough to make anyone who steps inside feel a bit… uncomfortable.

The family was cursed by misfortune: mental illness, failed fortunes, and mysterious deaths. Guests now report heavy footsteps in empty halls, strange knocking, and even ghostly apparitions—especially in the downstairs bathroom, where one Lemp took his own life. Today, it operates as a restaurant and inn.

Franklin Castle in Cleveland, Ohio

This Victorian mansion looks like it was designed to be haunted. Built in 1881 by Hannes Tiedemann, the home witnessed the deaths of several of his children and his wife within a short period.

Since then, tales of secret passageways, Nazi spies, and ghostly weeping have become forever attached to the castle. Owners have come and gone , but as the locals expected, none have chosen to stay.

The Sallie House in Atchison, Kansas

What began as a doctor’s residence in the 1800s took a dark turn when a young girl named Sallie allegedly died on the operating table . Her ghost, people say, began tormenting a later male resident, scratching, shoving, and even burning him.

Paranormal teams have confirmed that lights flicker, toys move on their own, and male visitors, especially, report sudden feelings of hostility.

Behind the brownstone elegance of 14 West 10th Street in Greenwich Village lies one of NYC’s darkest secrets: over 20 reported deaths have occurred there.

Mark Twain was its most famous tenant , living there briefly in 1900. He once recounted a story about a floating log inside the house, but insisted that a rodent must have been responsible. Paranormal enthusiasts, however, refuse to believe his explanation and now claim that Twain’s ghost also haunts the house.

The Joshua Ward House in Salem, Massachusetts

This Georgian brick home sits under a dark curse in Salem. Its original land once held the jail of Sheriff George Corwin, infamous for torturing accused witches during the 1692 Salem Witch Trials. Known as the "Strangler," Corwin died of a heart attack at age 30 and was secretly buried in the basement.

Today’s residents and visitors report strangled sensations, cold drafts, and photographic anomalies—including a famous 1980s photo that appears to show a ghostly woman dressed in black with no eyes.

LaLaurie Mansion in New Orleans, Louisiana

Few stories are darker than that of Madame Delphine LaLaurie, a socialite whose elegant French Quarter mansion concealed an appalling secret. In 1834, a fire revealed a hidden attic where enslaved individuals had been cruelly confined under horrific conditions.

LaLaurie fled to Paris, but the ghost stories remained. Visitors claim to hear moans and phantom footsteps and to see shadowy figures. Actor Nicolas Cage once purchased the property but quickly sold it, claiming bad luck followed him.

The Bell Witch Cabin in Adams, Tennessee

This cabin marks the site of one of America’s oldest and most documented hauntings: that of the Bell Witch . This ghost received the nickname for haunting the Bell family in the 1800s. For years, the family endured a spirit that scratched walls, pulled hair, and even spoke in full sentences.

Legend has it that the entity killed patriarch John Bell. To this day, the rebuilt cabin and nearby cave remain popular destinations for ghost hunters.

The Riddle House in West Palm Beach, Florida

Originally a funeral home (already a chilling start, right?), the Riddle House was later converted into a private residence. The story goes that it became haunted after an employee named Joseph hanged himself in the attic.

The house was eventually moved to Yesteryear Village to be preserved as a historical site, but it seems the ghosts made the trip too.
